Healthy Aging tips for Wheelchair Users- Part 1

Posted on September 10th, 2013 in Exercise by ElectricScooterBlogger |

In September, The Electric Scooter Store celebrates Healthy Aging Month.  Healthy Aging Month focuses on maintaining a healthy diet, staying active and staying positive as you age.  If you or someone you know uses a wheelchair or mobility scooter, it can be a challenge to get motivated or even excited to exercise. Today, we’ll educate you on how you can exercise and stay active if you use a mobility device.

Wheelchair Sports

When you or someone you know uses a mobility device like a wheelchair or mobility scooter, not exercising can make reaching for something on the counter or transferring from wheelchair to a standard chair more difficult and more dangerous.  If you choose not to exercise, lack of strength and movement can result in blood clots, body sores that could lead to infections and higher chances of getting sick or injured.

There are no disadvantages to exercise. This is especially true for a wheelchair or mobility scooter user.  Here are some great benefits to exercising:

  • It improves blood circulations, spine stability and posture.
  • It helps tone your muscles and overall health.
  • It reduces stress.
  • Exercise helps you maintain a healthy fitness level and schedule.
  • Exercise increases your flexibility, mobility, body awareness and muscle strength.
  • Most of all, you’ll feel better about yourself and you’ll know your limits of what you can and can’t do.

There are many sports available that are accessible for people who are in wheelchairs.  Sports like basketball, water-skiing, football, table tennis and even golf are available for people who use wheelchairs.  Rules vary from sport to sport and can be modified for wheelchair or mobility device users or people with limited mobility. There are other body and muscle exercises like sitting aerobics and Pilates for people who use wheelchairs as well!
The Electric Scooter Store is more than just your mobility one-stop-shop, we also offer lift chairs and pain management supplies. Make sure to read our next blog continuing on about exercising in your wheelchair!
