Getting your cholesterol levels down

Week 2

So, you’ve just gotten back from your doctor, and you’ve gotten the news that you need to lower your cholesterol. Now what? Well, there are a few easy things you can do to get that number down. Since September marks National Cholesterol Education Month, we thought we would touch on a few of those points:

Weight loss

Maybe you’ve been meaning to shake those extra pounds, but it just seems so intimidating! Well, did you know that all you need to lower your cholesterol is just lose a few pounds? As little as a 5 to 10 pound drop can make all the difference in that number

Healthy foods

This goes hand-in-hand with losing weight; however, there are some foods that are better than others when it comes to taking off those extra cholesterol numbers. These include whole grains, omega-3 fatty acids (which are found in fish) and leafy greens.

Exercise each day

We’re not talking about climbing a mountain—just a moderate amount of exercise every day can have great benefits when it comes to your cholesterol levels. Make sure you talk to your doctor before you start an exercise regimen, though.

Stop smoking

In addition to being bad for your lungs and heart, smoking can also hurt your body’s fight against bad cholesterol. Within 24 hours of smoking cessation, you’ll start to feel the benefits—and within 15 years, your risk of heart disease will be the same as if you never smoked.

Moderate amounts of alcohol

Notice we said moderate. Just like we said a little bit of exercise can help you, so also a little bit of alcohol can help your cholesterol levels. If you do overindulge, you’ll negate all the health benefits you receive from it!
